Used Wheel Chairs
- Buying Guide
Anybody living
with a disability, irrespective of the fact, if it is a recent
disability or something you have lived with your entire life,
realizes that there are lots of medical costs involved. The use
of a good wheel chair is so important to make life easier for
you, but as with anything else, quality comes at a price.
Buying a brand
new wheel chair can really set you back quite a bit. It might be
the first time you need a wheel chair or maybe you want
something better than what you have at the moment.
If you can’t afford a new wheel chair there is always the option
of buying used wheel chairs. There are many reasons used wheel chairs
are available and it doesn’t mean because it has been used, it
is too outdated or there is something wrong with it. People’s
needs change or they might have only needed it for a period of
time during recovery from an injury or illness.
On the other hand
it won’t always be that easy to get a wheel chair that fits your
specific needs. Wheel chairs are mostly converted to fit a
specific person’s body type.
People that are
not confined to a wheel chair but just need it when they go out
or go to areas where walking would be difficult shouldn’t have
too much of a problem finding something reliable for short
trips.
If you, however,
need a wheel chair that will be used a lot there are a few thing
to consider before you buy.
• The first thing
and the most important one is to know what type of wheel chair
you need. As said before, wheel chairs, these days, are made to
fit a specific person regarding weight, mobility and size.
Doesn’t matter how big a bargain a possible used wheelchair is, if these
basics are not the same as yours, it would be a waste of money.
• Buy from a
reputable company. Hospitals and rehabilitation centres are more
trusted sources for used wheel chairs than one that is picked up from an
advertisement in the newspaper or other online classifieds.
• Always consult your doctor or therapist before you buy
anything. They will know exactly what you need and if the chair
you want to buy will suit your specific needs.
• Remember that
warranties can’t be transferred from one person to another. If
the chair you are interested in still has a warrantee it won’t
apply to you when you buy it. This is a chance you will have to
take.
• Be careful of
used wheel chairs that might
look good and cheap. It is often better to not buy anything
that is over five years old. It will be more prone to wear and
tear and you might end up spending more on replacement parts
than what the actual savings were.
It is a big
purchase and you will want something that is comfortable and
reliable. You will need to consider very carefully if the
dollars saved by buying used wheel chairs will be worth your while. |
